The Container teu number doubled on only 9 years

During July 2016, the containership fleet reached a landmark 20 million TEU in terms of aggregate capacity. The boxship fleet passed the 10 million TEU mark, back in April 2007 (5 million teu in 2001).

The average size of containerships in the fleet stood at 1,807 TEU in April 2001 and increased to 2,425 TEU in May 2007. Today, with behemoth boxships of over 19,000 TEU on the water, the average size of units in the fleet is 3,832 TEU, and the average size of those on order is even larger at 8,030 TEU.
